Part 03 · Guide 12 of 33

When the marketplace decides for you

Most resale inventory reaches AI shopping surfaces through a marketplace rather than through a seller-configured integration. This lesson covers what that arrangement places with the venue and what it leaves with the seller, quotes the current documented positions of two marketplaces, notes what each position does and does not establish, and describes the cross-listing question that follows when a purchase can complete outside a marketplace’s own interface.

01

What a marketplace listing places with the venue

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

In a marketplace listing, the venue controls presentation, search, checkout, and the terms under which automated systems may transact. The seller supplies the item and the record describing it. Agentic exposure sits on the venue’s side of that division.

Three things are named separately here, because they are held by different parties.

What it refers toMeaning hereHeld by
ExposureWhether a listing can be reached from an AI surface at allThe marketplace
PermissionWhether a given automated system may transact under the agreementThe marketplace, granted in advance
Record accuracyWhether the listing is true, specific, and currentThe seller

The implementation work covered elsewhere in this course — building a feed, choosing a protocol, setting crawler rules — does not apply to a marketplace listing, because those decisions belong to the venue. What applies is reading the venue’s published position and maintaining the third row.

Two documented positions, side by side

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

Etsy’s help documentation states that certain listings can be bought through named AI shopping surfaces by eligible shoppers in the United States.1 It describes a route by which a buyer completes a purchase of some items from inside such a surface.

eBay’s user agreement takes a different position. Its current terms place three things on the prohibited list — agents that buy on a shopper’s behalf, bots driven by a language model, and fully automated order placement — unless eBay has granted permission in advance and expressly.2

MarketplaceDocumented positionWhat the position does not establish
EtsyPurchasing through named AI surfaces for some listings, for eligible US shoppers1That a specific listing, shop, shopper, or country qualifies
eBayAutomated purchasing prohibited unless permission was granted in advance and expressly2That no permitted arrangement exists for anyone

The third column carries the qualifiers each document uses. In the first row, the scope is some listings and eligible shoppers, so the statement does not extend to a particular listing without checking it. In the second row, the prohibition is conditioned on permission, so it describes a requirement to hold permission rather than the absence of any permitted arrangement.

The two rows are independent. The same item, cross-listed, is covered by both documents, and neither one contains information about the other. A position read on one venue does not describe marketplaces generally.

03

What permission means in the agreement

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

The eBay agreement conditions permitted automation on permission granted in advance and expressly.2 Under that wording, an observation of activity on the site and an announcement about a partnership are both separate from whether a given seller holds permission.

This applies to a seller acting as a buyer as much as to a seller listing goods. Software that monitors listings, watches for sourcing opportunities, or places orders is governed by the buying terms of the venue it operates against. Many resellers buy at volume on the same platforms where they sell, which places them under both sets of terms at once.

04

The parts that remain with the seller

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

The listing record is supplied by the seller, and any mediated path reads from it. A marketplace does not generate facts about an item that the seller did not provide, which makes the record the part of this arrangement a seller can act on directly.

  • A title and description stating what the item is, in the terms a buyer would use.
  • Condition described with specifics rather than a grade word on its own.
  • Photographs showing the flaws named in the description, so the record is internally consistent.
  • Quantity and availability that reach zero when the item sells anywhere.
  • A price that matches wherever the item appears.

On the camera, the second and third items are the ones that take work. A phrase such as “good vintage condition” is a grade word that resolves no specific question; a sentence recording that the shutter fires reliably at 1/125 and above, is intermittent below it, and that the base plate is scratched, states the facts a buyer needs. The photographs then have to show the base plate, or the record disagrees with itself at the point a careful buyer checks.

None of this is specific to AI surfaces. A mediated path reads the same record a human buyer reads, which is why the record requirements do not change with the route.

05

Cross-listing when a purchase can complete off-venue

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

Single-unit stock listed in more than one place has always carried a removal problem: the interval between a sale in one venue and the item disappearing from the others is the interval in which it can be sold twice. Where a purchase can complete from inside a surface, that interval is the number that determines the exposure.

This is a lifecycle question rather than a new one, and the measurement is straightforward.

  1. Record each marketplace’s current documented position on AI purchasing with the date it was read, so a later re-read has something to compare against.
  2. Measure how long a real sale on one venue takes to remove the item from the others, using an actual sale rather than an estimate.
  3. Compare that measured interval against the fact that a purchase may complete without a buyer visiting the venue’s own interface.
  4. Re-read both policies on a schedule, since both are live documents revised at the same address.

Completed for the camera, the record has five entries and one cell that has not been filled.

eBay listingAutomated ordering requires prior express permissionSame session on the last observed sale; no stated guaranteeBounded by that interval
Own storefrontThe seller holds the record and the removal pathSeconds, on the last observed saleBounded by that interval

The unmeasured cell is the one that determines whether anything can be said about the first row. It is filled by one sale and one timed observation, and until it is, the exposure on that venue is unrecorded rather than low.

06

What applies to a marketplace-only seller

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

For a seller who lists only through marketplaces, three things follow from the above: exposure is determined by the venue, listing accuracy is the part they perform directly, and re-reading the venues’ documented positions is the recurring task.

The remaining material in this course applies to a storefront, where the decisions covered here belong to the seller. It also describes what documented paths require, which is the reference point for evaluating any service offering to deliver one.

07

Where the two positions stand

Applies to marketplace onlyown storefronthybrid

Etsy documents purchasing through named AI shopping surfaces for some listings and eligible US shoppers.1 eBay’s user agreement prohibits agents buying on a shopper’s behalf, language-model-driven bots, and fully automated order placement, unless permission was granted in advance and expressly.2 The two are separate documents describing separate venues.

Neither source states a per-listing control for a seller, and neither describes how a surface selects among eligible listings. Where an entry in the cross-listing record reads “not yet measured,” it identifies an observation the seller has not made, not a level of exposure.

08

Practice

Exercise

Record each marketplace’s documented position

  1. For every marketplace you sell on, find and quote its current statement about automated or AI purchasing, with the date you read it.
  2. Record explicitly where a policy is silent, noting that silence is neither permission nor prohibition.
  3. Measure the real removal interval for one cross-listed item using an actual sale, and write the number down.
  4. Set a re-read date for each policy, since all of them are revised at the same address.

Check yourself

Etsy documents AI-surface purchasing. Does that cover a given listing?

Not without checking. The documentation covers some listings for eligible US shoppers, so it does not establish that a particular listing, shop, shopper, or country qualifies.

Something that looks like an automated purchase is observed on eBay. What does it establish about a seller’s own automation?

Nothing about that seller’s position. The agreement conditions such automation on permission granted in advance and expressly, so what is observed on the site does not indicate what any particular party is permitted to do.

Why does a prohibition conditioned on prior permission not describe a closed field?

Because the condition is the holding of permission. The text states a requirement rather than the absence of any permitted arrangement. The corresponding care applies to the other row: “some listings” does not extend to a particular listing.

What determines oversell exposure on a cross-listed single item?

The measured interval between a sale on one venue and removal from the others. Where a purchase can complete without a buyer visiting the venue’s own interface, that interval is what bounds the exposure.

Which part of this arrangement does the seller perform directly?

The listing record: title, description, condition specifics, photographs consistent with them, availability that reaches zero on sale, and consistent pricing. Any mediated path reads from that record.

09

Common questions

Can a single listing be opted out of AI surfaces?

The current sources do not describe a per-listing control for sellers. Where any control exists it sits with the marketplace, so the check is against that venue’s current documentation.

Does a marketplace route make a storefront unnecessary?

They are separate arrangements. On a storefront the decisions described in this course belong to the seller, including the ones a marketplace makes on a seller’s behalf.

A policy says nothing about AI purchasing. What does that establish?

That the document does not address it. Silence is neither permission nor prohibition, and recording it as silence keeps the distinction visible on a later re-read.

Should cross-listing stop?

That is a business decision the sources do not address. What can be established is the removal interval, which is measurable, and the fact that a purchase completing off-venue removes the browsing step that previously preceded one.

Where does automating one’s own sourcing sit?

Under the buying terms of the venue being bought from, which are separate from a seller relationship with it. Where automated ordering is conditioned on prior express permission, the question is whether that permission is held.

Claim evidence

Marketplace positions on automated purchasing differ. Etsy documents purchasing for some listings through named AI shopping surfaces for eligible US shoppers. eBay’s agreement takes the opposite posture, treating shop-on-my-behalf agents, language-model-driven bots, and fully automated order placement as prohibited absent permission granted in advance and expressly.

Permission for automated purchasing cannot be inferred from observation, because eBay conditions such automation on its prior express permission, and Etsy’s documented path does not establish eligibility for every listing, seller, shopper, country, or surface.
